Selling Discontinued Items on eBay
You can sell discontinued items on eBay? Who would have thunk it? You should. Many people do not like change. They want the same product they have been using for years. I have a wonderful shampoo that I use daily. You can no longer find it in my local stores, So what do I do? Go to eBay of course. You could be the one selling to me. All it takes is a some research and patience. You won't be able to sell the same product over and over because it's discontinued. Duh! So you just have to keep looking for the next discontinued product that you can sell.
Keep in mind that many food items and beauty items have expiration dates. You don't want to buy up a ton of these items. When the expiration date draws near, you might have to lot them together and sell them for cost. If there is no expiration date, you can price the item high and, depending on how much patience you have, wait until the right buyer comes along.
Products to look for are:
Skin and hair products
Hair Color
Coffee

Call the company directly. I mean really. They should know.
Amazon reviews. Believe me, customers will be complaining when something is no longer available.
Google is your friend. Companies will sometimes notify on their website if a product is being discontinued or a blogger might vent about the discontinuation of their favorite product.
Go to the category in eBay that you are interested in and type discontinued OR, find a product at the store and search completed listings on eBay. Sometimes I will take pictures in the store, go home and research, then go back to the store if it is worth it.
Watch the news. Sometimes they report interesting stories about products that are discontinued but still in demand.
